Balmoral Hotel

North British Hotel was one of the world's most excellent railway hotels. Designed in 1892 by William Hamilton Beattie was for most 20th century known as North British Hotel. The architect used a Victorian style influenced by Scottish Baronial Style. The hotel opened its doors to its guest on 15 December 1902.

The clock tower above the hotel was set 2 minutes faster to allow travellers to be at Waverley station on time and never miss the train. This is still on today. Only one day in a year's clock shows the exact time, which is when New Year is celebrated.

In 1922 The North British Railway Company, connected with London and North Easter British Railway Company and N.B. Hotel, started producing their own whisky.

In the 20th century, famous and influential people from around the world visited North British Hotel. The hotel was sold to an Edinburgh-based hospitality company, Balmoral International Hotels, in 1990. Under a new name – Balmoral ("majestic dwelling") was reopened in 1991 after 23 million worth of refurbishments, bringing back its splendour and majesty from the past. Since 1997 Balmoral hotel has been a part of the Rocco Forte Collection.
